locate website in Africa?

I need to locate where a website is hosted from. I have been given the duty of updating various information on www.madaclinic.com I was given the password, but before the man who set the site up could respond to the question , he disappeared into the African bush.

This is the website of a very small NGO based in Madagascar, I believe it is hosted out of Thailand however. The remaining original staff has no clue about this stuff. I need to figure out how to log in with the password.

Thank you,

Barret

@WebJoelAug 11.2007 — If what you are asking is legal to do (and it hurts nothing to trace the IP), enter the URL of the site here, for an IP-trace. That would at least tell you where to start.

@viesailauthorAug 12.2007 — Right, I'll try that. Yes, I do have permission to to this, not that I can prove that to anyone on here with the exception of an email from the director including the approval and password.

Any advice what to do after an ip search? I'm not asking how to crack I webpage. I have been given the password, I'm simply trying to find where to sign in.

Thank you,

Barret

@WebJoelAug 13.2007 — I tested this and it seems the IP originates in ...Chicago, Illinois! Not that this totally surprises me. My host is 5-hours ahead of my local time, so I am assuming it is in Europe. Since they are reliable and fast, I never bothered to examine their location.

And yes, -simpling sending 'ping' to discern the location of a host is totally legal, -I just didn't want to leave myself open to criticism that I was showing how~to. We have had a few requests like that before...

Finding the host of a site is the first step, you have the password and presmeably also the user-name. The utility above would show the host's name, from which you could visit host's site (if host is 'thisHostingcorp', visit that name-dot-com and see if this is a valid server host. If so, try 'signing-in'. Using that and some basic generic requirements (port settings, whether 'passive mode', 'read-only', 'local server', etc... they probably have a FAQ to explain their requirements), one should be able to sign-in using any FTP program.

Success!
