why we use @ and & with …

can any one please tell me why we use @ or & sign with variables and functions?
what these signs does???

@NogDogAug 03.2007 — "@" suppresses error reporting. It should probably be avoided while developing code, and really is not needed in production code either if you configure your display_errors setting to off in the production version (always a good idea for security reasons).

"&" when used in context with variables or functions has to do with [url=http://www.php.net/references]references[/url].
