How will you know if Google or MSN penalized your website?

Is there anyway, you can tell if your website was penalized by google, msn, askjeeves or other search engines?

If so, how will you be able to gain back your credibility?

I really really need to know ?

@innomindsSep 01.2007 — First of all find out whether the site is indexed or not. If it is de-indexed, then it is a clear sign of penalty.
