Validating HTML Again – Help Please!

I’m at it again. Trying to validate another page for the website. I’m not familar with css; the css you see is there from the help I’ve received from this forum (Thank You!). 3 of my other pages have passed validation with your help. I don’t understand the css codes yet, so I can’t figure out how to correct the errors here.

<b>Brief Historical Summary</b>

<br><br>

The Dogue de Bordeaux is one of the most ancient French breeds, probably a descendant of the Alans and, in particular, the alan vautre of which Gaston PHEBUS (or FEBUS), Count of Foix, said in the 14th century, in his Livre de Chasse that ” he holds his bite stronger than three sight-hounds “. The word ” dogue ” first appeared at the end of the 14th century. In the middle of the 19th century these ancient dogues were hardly renowned outside the region of Aquitaine. They were used for hunting large animals such as boar, for fighting (often codified), for the guarding of houses and cattle and in the service of butchers. In 1863 the first French dog show took place in Paris in the Jardin d’Acclimatation. The Dogues de Bordeaux were entered under their present name. There have been different types : the Toulouse type, the Paris type and the Bordeaux type, which is the origin of today’s dogue. The breed, which had suffered greatly during the two world wars, to the point of being threatened with extinction after the second world war, got off to a fresh start in the 60’s.

<p>

<b> General Appearance:</b>

<br><br>

Typical concave lined brachycephalic molossoid. The Dogue de Bordeaux is a very powerful dog, with a very muscular body yet retaining a harmonious general outline. He is built rather close to the ground, the distance sternum-ground being slightly less than the depth of the chest. Stocky, athletic, imposing, he has a very dissuasive aspect.

</p>

<p>

<b>Important Proportions:</b>

<br><br>

The length of the body, measured from the point of the shoulder to the point of the buttock, is superior to the height at the withers, in the proportion of 11/10. The depth of the chest is more than half the height at the withers.<br><br>

The maximum length of the muzzle is equal to one third of the length of the head.<br><br>

The minimum length of the muzzle is equal to one quarter of the length of the head. In the male, the perimeter of the skull corresponds more or less to the height at the withers.

</p>

<p>

Proportions in the Dogue de Bordeaux<br><br>

<ul>
<li> A. Height at the withers = circumference of the head
<li> B. Circumference of the chest at the level of elbows = height at the withers +25 to 30 cm
<li> C. Length of the body (scapulo-ischial)
<li> D. Length of the head from occiput to nose leather= 3 x F
<li> E. Skull from occiput to stop = 2 x F
<li> F. Length of the muzzle (maximum D:3, minimum D:4)
<li> G. Width of the skull seen from the front = greater base of a trapezium
<li> H. Width at the end of the muzzle = smaller base of a trapezium

@kiwibritJul 31.2007 — Ways I could check your page:

  • 1. Plough through your code and spot your error. Time consuming, and I might still miss it.

  • 2. Copy it into the web site I currently have on localhost in my computer, then see what Tidy has to say about the validation. Still chews up time I'd rather not loose.

  • 3. Click on a link that you have set up on your web server, and have a look at what the w3c validator has to say. Maybe do some CSS editing with the web authoring Firefox tool. Very quick. But you haven't put up the link - so I'll leave this one for now.

    @Major_PayneJul 31.2007 — Drop your code into the Direct Input Markup Validation Service. I did and it showed 4 errors. You could use some additional <meta> tags like one for the character set you want to use.

    @DoguenannyauthorJul 31.2007 — I did use the w3c validator, that's where I'm coming up with the 4 errors. This is the error message I'm getting:

    Line 139, Column 3: end tag for element "P" which is not open.

    </p>&#9993;

    The Validator found an end tag for the above element, but that element is not currently open. This is often caused by a leftover end tag from an element that was removed during editing, or by an implicitly closed element (if you have an error related to an element being used where it is not allowed, this is almost certainly the case). In the latter case this error will disappear as soon as you fix the original problem. If this error occurred in a script section of your document, you should probably read this FAQ entry.

    I've checked the document for leftover end tags, but didn't find any. So I'm guessing it has something to do with an element being used where it's not allowed, but I don't know what that would be. I will go back and check again to make sure the end tags are not out of sequence. Wouldn't that cause and error too?

    @Major_PayneJul 31.2007 — Try using the attached file and validate it. Your </p> tags were after your lists causing a flag, you also need to use CSS and <span> tags instead of <font> tags. A few other things could be changed, but this should get you started. Try not to use <table> tags for layout.
