Cookies and PHP and Javascript

I have read a few articles on how to use cookies, but I can’t seem to find out how to keep a users selection of a link.

For instance I’m trying to keep the same size that a user has clicked on when they move to another system in the left hand panel. So a user clicks on ‘click here for more sizes’ then clicks a size, that size is displayed. Then the user clicks on another system in the left hand side, and I would like that system to display the same size as the one that the user was already looking at, but on another system, if you see what I mean?

I know that I will need to employ some javascript to gather which link has been pressed by the user, but I’m not sure what and how to use it with cookies, and how javascript and php work together?? Any help would be appreciated.
