include_path = ".:/php/includes"

My php.ini file contains the line:
include_path = “.:/php/includes”
What does the dot-colon ( .: ) stand for?
As I understand it, in directory paths the single dot ( . ) normally refers to the current directory, and a double-dot ( .. ) refers to the parent directory. But what does the dot-colon stand for?

    Thank you! I'm a Windows programmer and am so used to seeing semi-colon as the sparator, so when I saw the semi-colon (it's being used on a Linux machine) I didn't recognize it as comparable to the semi-colon.
