on click download and process php file

I’ve not been doing this long so hope this isn’t an obvious/stupid a question.

I am trying to create a button/link that will download a file and then do some server side processing in php (update a dtabase) to log the fatc that it has been downloaded (or at least attempted).

I hav ebeen racking my brains but have not come with any workaround. I would have thought that after the download there would be someway for me to redisplay the page with for example, but even if i force a download in php, I cannot get another page to dispaly.

Any ideas?

Of course, all that last part is done in an include file so you can't see it -- but the concept is plain.
