I just launched my site 5 days ago and my alexa ranking has jumped 2,000,000 spots! I have the alexa toolbar and I’m pretty sure I’m the only one besides spiders visiting my site. This truly proves how worthless Alexa is!
@rootJun 30.2007 — #Well if you want to run spyware right on your website, infecting all your visitors, duping them into believing that they need the toobar in their browser, carry on but I do seriously advise against using it.
You may need the help of a tool to get rid of the tool bar as IM sure that this runs in background even after so called removal by the uninstall process, the spyware tool will remove any trace of it.
Spybot Search and Destroy by PepiMK is a good tool as is Adaware SE and Spwareblaster, all free tools and all are the most popular choice amongs computer users.
Next time you decide on installing a helper bar, do yourself a favour, do a "G" for it and see what comes up. Aleza is like Comet Cursor, another well known Spyware and Tracking software.
@rootJun 30.2007 — #How are you getting the stats then? what code did you have to put into your page or do you include a script with src property from the alexa server?
@SPAMJun 30.2007 — #That doesnt explain how you get your stats does it?
. asked a question about what code your site has to call in order for your Firefox browser to gather the information about your site stats. Somewhere along the process it requires some server and database to recorded this information.
@ghipplehauthorJun 30.2007 — #NOTHING!!!! IT DOES NOT REQUIRE A SERVER AND DATABASE ON MY SITE. Isn't it obvious that the toolbar sends the info directly to alexa? Hello? Anyone home?
@SPAMJun 30.2007 — #YES I AM, IM NOT DEAF YOU KNOW, A LITTLE HARD OF HEARING BUT NOT DEAF YET.
SO WHT DID YOU BOTHER INSTALLING A PILE OF JUNK LIKE THAT IN THE FIRST PLACE? YOU SHOULD HAVE THOUGH ABOUT IT BEFORE YOU POSTED, ALL YOU HAVE DONE IS INSTALLED SPYWARE ON YOUR COMPUTER.
@ghipplehauthorJun 30.2007 — #Its obviously not relevant since it starts out with "The toolbar is free and simple to download for anyone using Internet Explorer 5 or later. It is not available for any other browser." and since I have firefox... hmmm. Alexa isn't spyware. You download so they can track your internet statistics.. that is what its for and thats what they tell you its for... therefore its not spyware, although it worthless since the traffic results are scewed towards the tech community.
Shooting your mouth off gets you knowhere and yes, you are having spyware on your system, it is knowing to have privacy concerns amongst the Illuminati of which you are obviously not.
Free comes at a price, but you didnt consider that.
Good luck in the future, when you eventually begin to read between the lines, you will see what a *rat you were.
@ghipplehauthorJun 30.2007 — #did u even read my post? I'm using a SEOQuake not the ALEXA Branded toolbar? Its completely different but still posts traffic to Alexa (I want it to). Think... I don't have the Alexa toolbar right? Thus I must not have the Alexa toolbar... I have SEOQuake... not on IE, on Firefox... thus I dont have the Alexa toolbar, I have a plugin on firefox... NOT THE SAME THING!
@ghipplehauthorJun 30.2007 — #a quote from the article YOU posted "Long story short: you can't activate the Spyware component used in Alexa if you don't use the Alexa tool."
@CentauriJun 30.2007 — #I've sort of been following this thread, but do not know about the Alexa toolbar or copies... However, if the toolbar is on your browser sending info to Alexa, then it cannot have anything at all do do with stats from your internet site, but has everything to do with you letting Alexa know your surfing habits, and them rating you on that...
@rootJun 30.2007 — #You must be a total <div> as thats what Spyware does, reports your surfing habits, key logging on items like these isnt uncommon, commet cursor logs keystrokes, many other spyware plugins do also...
@felgallJul 01.2007 — #If you tell your antispyware program to allow Alexa to record your surfing habits then it can do so and isn't spying. The Alexa rankings are based exclusively on those results from people who either knowingly or unknowingly allow Alexa to record all of the sites that they visit via the toolbar. Since most people do not want Alexa tracking all heir web activity the Alexa rankings are completely inaccurate when it comes to true rankings. All it ranks is the visitors to sites that allow Alexa to see exactly which sites they visit. he other 99.99999% orf people can have completely different viewing habits and since they are not included in the Alexa stats the Alexa stats are almost meaningless.
@felgallJul 01.2007 — #With Alexa position 100,000 and position 10,000,000 are approximately equal. You can go from one to the other with just a couple of extra visitors with the toolbar within a short period. Positions 10,000 and 99,000 are also roughly equivalent as are positions 1,000 and 9,999. Even a top 10 ranking just means somewhere in the top 50 sites on the web.
@ghipplehauthorJul 01.2007 — #just an update on the worthless Alexa... moved up another 1.2 million places... currently in the top 800,000. I'm trying to see if I can get into the top 1,000 just by me viewing my own site for debugging. lol
@rootJul 01.2007 — #My main point being that to rely on some *ull *hit tool bar to say where your site is when all you reall need to worry about is your site clicks, why bother with that pile of junk?
You can get free webhosts if your too tight to save up your allowance to buy web hosting that gives you everything you need, today it is fairly cheap at a round an average of $3 per month all in, you then can script your own tracker and monitor your site from REAL statistics and not some old crap offered up from some spyware site with dubious results.
@ghipplehauthorJul 01.2007 — #I have real statistics .. The whole point of my thread is that Alexa is worthless. Again, are you actually following this thread or just posting random crap?
I have seldom read a post of this forum which contained as many rude and impolite remarks as those by Ghippleh. Frankly if I were a moderator of this site I would suggest to him that he takes his toys and goes to play with the rude ignorant members of some other sites I have read once in a while until being put off by the childish behaviour of the members.
What the heck was the purpose of the post in first place?? I seem to lost something along the way.
@ghipplehauthorJul 02.2007 — #well, I apologize if I came off rude to all the members here (seriously). But as a testament, SPAM has just been banned from the forum. So he must have been causing trouble elsewhere as well. The purpose was just to show how ineffective Alexa is a tracking stats. (I was just reacting in the heat of the moment)
