Domain and host separate?

I’ve read that you should register your domain with one company and your actual website with another company. Is this true? If it is, I’m a little confused, because most sites offering domain only offer e-mail also. Then the web hosts also offers e-mail…so when I sign up would I lose my e-mail? I would rather keep everything in one place, it seems easier. I am thinking of using ValueWeb (unless you all have had horrible experience with them…I’ve used them before and they seemed fine to me.) One other question, I want to improve my web developing skills, and have found the free tutorials online… the thing is, I don’t know what I’m doing because I don’t have a site to practice on and there are so many programming languages (PHP, Ruby, ASP, JS, etc.). Should I get a linux host or a windows host? I thought a linux server might be best because it seems most people want PHP and the other things I can get on a linux host. Sorry for all the questions. Just really confused on this whole subject. Thanks.

@athiraJul 06.2007 — It is not necessary that you use two different companies for domain and hosting. You can get both at the same place. Try attilahosting.com . If you are interested in php scripting, then, linux hosting is best as linux servers are more robust and secure. For asp, it will be better you go in for windows hosting as most linux hosts including attilahosting do not provide asp in their servers. Hope that helps.

@Compguy_PeteJul 09.2007 — if your just starting out I suggest keeping things as simple as possible... If you do both though the same company you'll have less billing and other issues pop up later.

I also suggest keeping your sites with the same registrar, A long, long time ago I used different ones as the registrar game opened up and currently it's been a less than perfect situation. as I remember to transfer the domains to late to consolidate the registrations.

@GreatDomainRaceJul 11.2007 — I may be easier to register and host at the same company. Some hosting companies may not be able to accommodate all of your needs. In that case you will just have to find one that does. But beware. Pick a reputable company. Hosting companies can burn you bad.

Thank you,

@EskhostingJul 12.2007 — It is really easy to manage both domain name and web hosting services from one place

@felgallJul 12.2007 — Few companies actually do both. Most times when you buy both from the same company you get the hosting from them and the domain name from the registrar that they use. It simplifies the setup but means thhat you don't necessarily get the best price for the domain and often you still need to deal with the domain registrar directly if there are problems.

@AnotherMariaJul 13.2007 — For me it really doesn't seem to matter. My boyfriend is hosted by Dreamhost and he also registered his domain name by them.

As for me, I registered my domain names with iPower, and I'm being hosted by my boyfriend who is using Dreamhost.

Set ups were easy for both of us, although of course I had to take a few more extra steps to use his host.

@felgallJul 13.2007 — You might as well get your domain from whichever reputable provider offers to sell it to you for the cheapest price since that is the only difference between them unlike hosting where there are many factors involved and where the cheapest isn't necessarily the best.

@benjee68Aug 02.2007 — read this...not sure how much validity it holds but it's saying to keep your domain at the same place your registered it

@braydondAug 11.2007 — My only recommendation is try to stay away from web hosting plans that include a free domain. You might not get some features like international support (no www to access your site) - check out www.5shadeshosting.com you can see some of the features you'd want with a domain.
