A rookie needing some advice

My name is Chris, I’m just about complete with my CIW : Master Site Designer certification, and the only experience I have is with the classroom.

I need help.

I’ve been checking monster.com, and looking through a few “web designer agencies” for work, but haven’t gotten any work yet. I’m confused, and a little worried. I know I’m new, and I know I have alot to learn still – but one thing I don’t know and need to is how to get work.

Please help.

@KDLAJun 14.2007 — Best thing to do is to work on your portfolio. Get some small-scale projects under your belt. The Portfolio plays a big part in your being hired. You may have to work freelance for a while, and possibly for no charge. But, having the recommendations and visual proof really adds to your credentials.

Suggested venues: non-profit organizations -- charities, churches, community groups, etc. They'll always be thankful for whatever you do, and have the community presence to be a worthy reference. Lots of times, too, you'll meet someone within these organizations that needs some commercial web work done, which can get you started on the professional freelance basis.

Good Luck -

@DubbyauthorJun 14.2007 — How do I find these sort of groups? Is it just a "get lucky" thing? I'm a rather secluded person.

@KDLAJun 14.2007 — GET INVOLVED.

Success doesn't happen without you actively pursuing it. ?

@potterd64Jun 20.2007 — Don't rely on Monster, or any other online job site. You may as well submit your resume to them, but a large majority of people come across jobs through networking with other people, not passive job sites.

So you need to

1. find any job fairs around you and go to those

2. think of who you know and what companies they work at.

3. research companies in your area and call them directly.

It may be hard at first since you only have classroom experience. Try to get something, ANYthing (not porn related) to put on your resume. Sign up at http://www.linkedin.com/ and see if you can find anything there (i've never used it but it seems promising). You can also find some work at craigslist.

Also find out if your school provides some sort of career counseling or job placement. Take full advantage of that if it's available.

Success!
