Help with Welcome Page for New Visitors

I’m completely new to scripting and I’m hoping someone here can help me accomplish what I’d like to do or point me in the direction of a resource that’ll get me started, or even a couple of existing scripts that I might be able to combine.

Here’s what I’d like to do:

When a new visitor, or the googlebot, comes to my home page, say mysite.com, I would like them to be redirected to a keyword rich welcome page, like mysite.com/welcome, for their first 5 visits. After a visitor has been around more than 5 times they will be allowed to go straight to my main page, mysite.com.

If the visitor hasn’t been around in the past few months I’d like to be able to have the cookie expire.

I’d like to use this script on a WordPress blog as well as on a straight xhtml page.

Thanks for taking the time to look at my question, I really appreciate it.

@nshiellJun 04.2007 — Very cheeky, first of searchbots don't process JavaScript so I think that this is a bit of a silly way of doing it.

Whats wrong with the keywords in your site - normal text?

If you want to learn JavaScript or any other web scripting language goto www.w3schools.com

javascript.internet.com has some good JavaScript examples

@thechasboiJun 04.2007 — I would say that this is very scary for the user. If I went to your site and was redirected or even if it was seemless I would be ticked to find out what you did and make sure other people knew about this. This kind of stunt would likely ok more than likely get you blackballed from, the search engines as a malware or spammer. Not a wise idea to try anything remotely in this realm.

@iandstewartauthorJun 04.2007 — Thanks for the input, I didn't know this kind of activity would be frowned upon. I thought it was sort of standard internet marketing practice. It's actually suggested by Seth Godin of all people (there's even a wordpress plugin that does something like this, displaying a welcome message to new visitors, called "What would Seth Godin Do?".) Is it really all that bad if the welcome page is helpful?

Anyway, I'll forget about it if you folks think it's a bad idea. Thanks for your help.

@thechasboiJun 05.2007 — If you visit my site www . indexedvisuals . com Do not want to get in trouble for spamming here. But take a look at the splash page. Every one who comes to the site goes here. If you navigate through the rest of the site you will see that it is compartmentalized. You could do something like that if you want the google/search engine exposure.
