Can’t clear cache in IE6.0

Can anybody help?

DNS pointer change at domain registrar just took effect, but I can’t get one of my computers to pull up the website. It keeps loading the default ‘Under Construction’ page from the registrar’s server. I CAN pull up the site on other computers.

Running IE 6.0 on Win2000 Pro

I have tried all options in IE’s Internet Options window that I can find;
Deleted files, including all offline content.
Deleted Cookies.
Cleared history.
Set ‘Check for newer version of stored pages’ radio button to:
1. Every visit to the page
2. Every time you start Internet Explorer
3. Automatically

I have manually deleted cookies & temp Internet files.

Nothing has worked. Any suggesstions would be appreciated.

@toicontienAug 08.2003 — Are you working Online or Offline in the File menu of IE? That could make a difference. If you are working online, try the following:

Try specifying a different DNS server on that machine. DNS servers often take some time to update their listings. If your computer is using a secondary DNS server, it probably is getting its info from a primary DNS server that gets updated, and then it SHOULD send those updates out to any secondary DNS servers that rely on it for DNS records (you'll have to forgive me if I got some terminology wrong, it's been a while).

OR

FTP into your web space and make sure you only have one file named index.xxxx or default.xxxx, where you would replace the x's with some sort of HTML, PHP, ASP, or JSP file extension.

Since going to http://www.yoursite.com/ doesn't specify the exact file name, the web server will return an index file of some sort (Linux, and Microsoft NT servers) or a default file (Microsoft NT servers, mostly when they have ASP installed). With multiple index and default files in a given directory, the web server will return the file according to some sort of heirarchy set up in the web server settings.

For example, a directory with the files index.htm and index.html in them will have the index.htm file grabbed if someone requests the directory name and no file name to go with it.

@PeOfEoAug 08.2003 — If you have manually gone through and deleted all of the temporary internet files and your history from local settings then its not a problem with the cache, because thats it right there.

@Baby_JaiAug 08.2003 — Im ahving the same issue. I jsut recently changed my dns and I can view it on AOL and opera but aol keeps loading the page I saw 4 days ago. I wiped my cache and I was told that my ISP keeps the domain for so long then it times out. This is very frustarting becuase I hate using AOL to view my site. Im in a rut just like you, Im guessing we just havce to wait to have to be able to view it

@PeOfEoAug 08.2003 — Well that should not be happening. There are meta tags that tell ie to recache a page each time it is loaded, but that can lag it up a bit for frequent 56k visitors.

Yes, I'm working online.

I've already tried to access a specific page other than the index; www.mysite.com/otherpage.htm I'm still getting the registrar's page.


Baby Jai,

I never heard of an ISP caching a page. That would require an incredible amount of storage, considering how many pages & how many users they would have.


If this is any help to anybody, the machine I'm having problems with is at work. Large company network, firewall & proxy servers to deal with. At home, IE & NS both display the proper page.

@PeOfEoAug 08.2003 — An isp does not cache a page. They have the actual documents on their server why would the need to? A chached page is just the graphix of the page and other essential things to the page does not take as long to load the next time you visit it, its just some of the data so you dont have to download it each time.

@Baby_JaiAug 08.2003 — whether or not on your computer, or works, Wherver you visited the site last on whatever computer your not going to be able to view it. just try going on another explorer like Aol or Netscape and you will be able to view it. For some reason, I cannot view it in IUE. I have cleared the cache, I have refreshed my ip, diabled my ip, reset my ip, and still nothing. It has something to do with IE or my IP. This is a dead end, look slike I just have to wait for it to be able to be viewed with IE.

inside that folder is the history and temporary internet files.

I cannot figure this out, when it says site is temporarily down, when i open up netscape I get the same thing. Then, when I wait about 30 minutes, boom it works. Whats up with this?

Using Win 9x:

  • 1. Start > Settings > Control Panel


  • 2. Network


  • 3. Highlight the TCP/IP protocol you are using (dial-up adaptor if using 56k, ethernet adapter if using LAN). Click Properties.


  • 4. Click the DNS Configuration Tag at top.


  • 5. Put a dot next to "Enable DNS" and enter the primary and secondary DNS servers in the space provided, hitting the "Add" button after you've entered each address.


  • 6. Click OK. Click OK. Reboot and try again.


    • For WinXP:

  • 1. Start > Control Panel


  • 2. (from category view) - Network Connections


  • 3. Right click on the network connection you are using. Click Properties.


  • 4. Click the Network tab at top


  • 5. Select Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) and click the Properties button.


  • 6. Put a dot next to "Use the following DNS server addresses."


  • 7. Enter primary and secondary DNS servers in spaces provided. Click OK. Click OK. If you're on dial-up, disconnect and reconnect. LAN users should see the change take affect immediatly.

    This keeps sounding more and more like a server issue. I was working on a web site for Central Michigan University's journalism department and ran into similar issues. Only that time the server seemed to be caching the pages. The updates I made to any file on the web server did not immediately update in the browser (regardless of whether it was IE, NS, AOL, etc...).

    I often had to delete the file off the server and then reupload it several times before the change would take affect, or else wait almost 30 minutes for the server to recognize that something changed.

    When I altered an HTML, JS, or CSS file directly on the server, the change would never take affect. Screwy indeed. I never got what server was being used. It always acted like there was some weird caching going on in the server itself.
