Event order Javascript

I am very new to javascript and basically here is the issue:

I need two events to occur (a fading event – which already works), and once that event has completely finished (it lasts for 1000 milliseconds) i want another event to occur (i have not got the code for this one – all i want this event to do is effectively disable two DIVs within the page) – is it possible to make one happen after the other and what code should i use for the second event???
