Hi,

My site has a couple drop downs to change the size and style of my product. When someone clicks “large”, it changes the price correctly, but it doesn’t specify large in the cart. Can you tell me how to change that? (Pretend you’re replying to a 6-year-old though, I don’t understand most code-speak)

Thanks!

@rootMay 24.2007 — Do you have access to PHP on the web host your using? or any server-side for that matter?

@diane22authorMay 24.2007 — I don't think so...

@rootMay 24.2007 — It was a hint to go and find out... if you have any server-sides then you will be able to use your own cart, have full control over it and then when you need to just use paypal for payment collection.

@diane22authorMay 24.2007 — Yeah, I'm not really willing to pay a monthly fee for a cart when this system is so close to working.

@rootMay 24.2007 — ? monthly fee, where? if you script your own cart then theirs no fee involved other than your time, if you have server-sides then your already paying for service, use it.

@diane22authorMay 24.2007 — Oh, ok apparently i have no idea what you're talking about then, lol. I think what you're talking about is quite possibly way over my head.

@rootMay 24.2007 — Ok, having looked at your domain name provider, I see that goDaddy.com provided the domain name... WHO is the HOSTING server provided by? same people? or have you got another host elsewhere? HOST is the place that your website is served up from.

What serversides do they allow? PHP,ASP,JSP,Perl, or some other CGI?

Check because if you have access to server-sidesm you can creat your cart in your webspace and as I previously said, request payment at the end by passing Paypal the relavent data, you then dont need to rely on paypals cart which I know to be problematic, my girlfriend stopped using them because she was losing more than custom than she was taking.

@diane22authorMay 24.2007 — Yes, hosting is also thru goDaddy, and they apparently support PHP. I'm not sure about the others though...

edit- found it. My hosting package includes PHP, but NOT ASP, perl, etc..

@rootMay 25.2007 — Well you better get to the PHP threads to learn how to use PHP to your advantage...

The red pill or the blue pill.... ?

@felgallMay 25.2007 — If you rename the select fields in the form to the field names that you want to pass those values to Paypal in - baseos0 and baseos1 - then the values will load into Paypal directly without needing the JavaScript.

Certainly no PHP is needed to set up a Paypal shopping cart.

Paypal carts are not free...

If diane22 scripted her own then the costs you pay per month would be negated and only be charged per transaction, it also gives diane22 possible access to a php mailer, possible database access (if included) or flatsheet, customer lists are valuable data and by starting a customer list now rather than later you not only keep past buyers upto date with mailers, you also limit the amount of backlog you need to get through, etc... and a whole host of other avenues that you have not considered, by passing this over to paypal, you lose but if you retake control over YOUR data and only need then to pass billing data and the customer provides personal data direct to paypal, so they dont lose out, it also provides a future expansion to offer alternate gateways like a merchants account or nochecks, worldpay, etc.

By paying for paypal cart, as a seller your getting the rough end of the deal and still have to pay for it as well.

@felgallMay 25.2007 — If you have a Paypal account then you have access to use the built-in Paypal shopping cart at no extra charge. The charges for purchases via the Paypal cart are identical to the charges via the Paypal Buy Now link (or cheaper really since you only pay the flat fee portion once).

Paypal don't sell a separate shopping cart. There are third parties who sell shopping carts that work with Paypal for those people who either don't know about the built-in one or who want features that the built-in one doesn't provide.

@rootMay 25.2007 — What ever, it still doesnt get around the fact that if diane22 wrote her own cart for her site so that she could collate the data and store what is needed, provide personal email in her site format, IM assuming that goDaddy havent surpressed email function like allot of hosts do. As well as the oppotuninty to create a cart that allows useres to come and go as they please, picking up at a later date the items that they wer intrested in.

Clearly the scope of what can be achieved form a bit of PHP help out weighs the use of the Paypal cart system which is very limited in some respects, prone to pronblems and on a personal fron, my partner stopped using paypal becaus they were losing her sales because of the way in which paypal operate, thsi use of PHP would leave hersite open to useing ANY payment gateway of choice, not just limited to paypal.

Maybe you should get your perscription checked or newer glasses...
