onFocus tag?

What is the JS or HTML tags or settings that allow the contents of an <input…>
to be highlighted when tabbed or clicked into the field? Is it onFocus()? or onKeypressed()? or something else?

What I’m looking for is the way the field selected is highlighted and
1. Will be erased with a space or replaced with the next key pressed
2. Will remain unchanged if an ‘arrow’ key or another tab is used to go to the next field.

Thanks for any information.
