I’m in the initial stages of building a software for a financial institution. The main criteria needed are able to etract and update a large database. real-time validation of form entries, multiuser networked environment spanning different locations.
the first thing that came to mind is something web based app due to its flexibility for networking (ie. different pcs types, maybe platforms also, and no need to client installations) and go through their intranet to connect users to the main office servers. thus, php should be able to do the job.
further, no licensing fees… plus the ability to quickly link to diff types of dbs in case things change in the future (via pear, easily changed to mysql, postgresql,etc). preferrably to oracle and ms msql server, since most use enterprise db solutions.
however, there are a lot of realtime validattions, like client code checks for access, realtime acct# verification, real-time calculations (like for loans, etc)… normally, javascript would do and today ajax is great. my only hitch to this is that if the user turns off javascript in the browser… then the system becomes vulnerable and cant do its checks properly.
Is there a way to remedy this? or if not, is there an alternative to the javascript under this scenario?
Assuming both answers above are no… right now i’m in the planning stage so i’m quite open to using other platforms. i only chose php/web/mysql for the reasons stated above plus the ease of connecting to db (unlike in java).
However, if there are better solutions, i’m sure there are… becuase big companies like sungard, etc use windows based like software that is able to be adjusted to all networking/db environments.
