New Hosting Co.

ok ive owned the domain www.global-european.com for the last year and 8 months, the hosting was provided by WebKoreServer which was a reseller on behalf of Evohosting.co.uk, Recently WebKoreServer merged with EvoHosting and as a result my hosting package was adjusted to align with EvoHostings packages, this resulted in a slight increase in price and slight decrease in what i got for my money.

The downgrade never made much of a differene untill, recently when i tried to install MediaWiki as a support centre for my scripts that i wrote, only to find it requires PHP 5 yet Evohosting only had 4.x.x exact version unknown at the moment.

so ive been trawling the net so to speak in a bid to find a supplier that offers PHP 5, to no great success, sooo does anyone know any hosting Co. that offer the following:

6-8gb disk space
100gb Traffic
5-10 MYSQL Databases **Minimum**
PHP 5 <– Vital
PHPMYAdmin
Cpanel – pr equivilent
Unlimited Subdomains
Free Domain
Per Month Payment
For no more than £13 Per Month?

p.s. i have been told by Evohosting through a support ticket that PHP 5 is available via the use of a .htaccess modification, is that possible?

@David_HarrisonApr 01.2007 — Dreamhost would do all that and lots more. There's actually an entire thread devoted to which hosting to go for.

I've moved this thread to the domain names forum, since it's the closest thing we have to a hosting forum here.

@David_HarrisonApr 01.2007 — Yeah, it's really better if you pay by the year, because then the setup fee get's waived, and if you pay every two years, you get a 20% discount too. However there are ways around said setup fee, other than paying by the year.

They offer such high quotas, simply because 99.9% of people who sign up with them only use a tiny amount of space. HDD's are pretty cheap now, so it's not a problem to jam a few drives into a file server to keep a nice excess of space.

I'm hosted with Dreamhost myself, and there have been a few problems since I signed up, a couple of power cuts and a couple network routing issues which resulted in some downtime, but for a budget shared webhost, you don't expect 5 nines reliability. I'd guestimate that they have 97 - 99 % uptime, which is pretty good, despite what complainers on Dreamhost Status say, a vocal minority.

@nebrivApr 01.2007 — I use Dreamhost....I like them i have had my site for 1.75 months and have had around 2 hours of downtime. they do seem to have a lot of down time often so if you rely on your website then try someone else

but they really do have a lot of features they are really really good besides downtime...they are kind of slow refering to pages timeing out and stuff sometimes. they have one click installs for mediawiki too....look into it...they really are good

@homer09001authorApr 01.2007 — can you use that space for reseller hosting?

Edit: yep found it in the wiki, its not against T&C, hmm im soo tempted now

anyone else able to share an experience?

@David_HarrisonApr 01.2007 — You could just try it for yourself, there's a 97 day money back guarentee (so long as you pay by credit card or google checkout). If you don't like it, you've got over 3 months to find somewhere else.

Read the financial section of their TOS.

@homer09001authorApr 01.2007 — ok Thy have done the deed, month by month basic package by google checkout, will keep you posted on my experiences.

@David_HarrisonApr 01.2007 — I still don't understand why you want to pay by the month, but whatever.

Perhaps you might want to look into somehow enabling PHP5 on your current host first, before rushing off and buying more hosting. Transferring a site can be a bit of a headache, and if you're happy where you are (other than the PHP issue, which may be fixable), then don't be in such a rush to leave.
