Writing a Template System in PHP

I don’t want to use SMARTY would it be a stupid idea to write my own code from scratch? Are there any tutorials on this?

From our experience with template engines, don't get one unless you really need it and don't get smarty, just separate the code from the template with vectors and variables, same thing.
