Lotus Notes mailto: form action workaround?

You may be aware of the problem with the mailto protocol and Notes v6.5.5 which duplicates the address in the To: field (not a valid email address) and/or posts form data in the To:, cc, or Subject: field rather than in the body of the email where it belongs. I created an entire site relying on the mailto: protocol to submit requests. (Can’t use either server side apps or cgi email. Don’t ask – it’s a long and rediculous story.) Anyway, then we got the new release of Notes and the whole thing has been rendered useless for request submissions.

Is it possible to write a script that will duplicate the mailto: form action and keep it client side? Big hurdle is that it has to pull info from all types of form elements, just like the mailto: protocol does with email clients that actually support it properly.

@felgallMar 24.2007 — Not everyone has an email program linked to their browser so mailto: links only work for some visitors to your site. If you want something that works for everyone use a contact form and a form2mail script. The only people guaranteed to be able to access mailto: links are spammers.

@SimplifierauthorMar 26.2007 — Thanks for the response, Felgall.

Let me explain. The site is an agency intranet site so it will be accessed only by agency employees. It is behind a firewall so I'm not concerned with spam in this case, that's somebody else's cross to bear. (My previous post was addressing an issue with a different site - internet.) All employees have the same email client (though not the same version). Because of the security issues, I am not allowed to use the Common Gateway Interface. We are installing php on the servers but I don't have access to them (not authorized to upload or maintain scripts) and I want to maintain control over as much of the site as possible. Considering all of this, I have determined that the mailto: protocol is my best choice - except for that one pesky little issue involving Notes v6.5.5. which is installed on about 80% of our PCs. That version will eventually go away and the problem will go away with it. But, until that time, I need a temporary solution.

Hence, my post addressing a specific problem regarding the mailto form action.

Since it is a Notes v6.5.5 problem, not a browser's languages problem, it looks obvious to me that there is no temporary solution.
