Front-End and Database on Seperate Servers?

Someone I know has asked me to look at thier website and to make improvements. Right now, they’re runnning two servers, one with a database and a DB frontend, and the other with thier main website, that also accesses the database on the first server.

To me, it makes sense to put all this on a single server, but they are quite animate about keeping it seperate.

The argument is “You shouldn’t put all your eggs in one basket”. “If one goes down we should still be able to access the other.”

What are your thoughts on this?

@ray326Mar 23.2007 — Is this all internal or are parts of it on the Internet? The database server should NOT be visible to the Internet.

@lightnbauthorMar 24.2007 — I'm not sure. I just know that the sites I've built in the past had the MySQL databases and the web server under the same account.

As of right now, they have a front-end on a website that they use to interface with MySQL on one server and an independant informational website on another server (which sometimes accesses the database server).

I'm not sure what you mean by visible to the web though. I can access my database through PHPmyAdmin, and that is visible from anywhere in the world.

@ray326Mar 24.2007 — Sounds like two web sites using one database. That could run on one box for sure and the second could be used as an image failover.
