handling distance by zip, country, etc.

right now i have mysql tables for countries, and states (us only). i want to have a table of zip codes (since they don’t change i am assuming).

my goal is to determine distance between zip codes. can i do this regardless of what country the user is in?

if i could get the users zip code, handling their country and state could happen in the backend, but i don’t know how to find the data for me to do that with.

any help is appreciated.
