I have successfully placed a Url Icon into a site with the line:

<link href=”http://69.72.214.200/~name/site/myicon.ico” rel=”shortcut icon”>

Where my site: www.domain_b.com is hosted, and an icon file “myicon.ico” is placed in the same subfolder as my index.htm file is located in a subfloder on my public.html folder. (/public.html/hosted_domain/domain_b/index.htm)

www.domain_b.com is not the main hosted domain; it is a site that is forwarded by my account at Godaddy.com, and the forwarded address at goddady.com is:

http://69.72.214.200/~name/site/

I have registered another domain name at webhostingbuzz.com under a registred name at godaddy.com and this domain is directed via namesevers assigned at godaddy.com.

everything works fine so far.

Again, when I go to the site with is a index.html file in a subfolder in my public.html at my hosting site, the url icon is seen in my browser.

http://69.72.214.200/~name/site/

But the url icon does NOT get loaded when I address the site as its “real name” i.e the name I registered at Godaddy.com and forwarded to

http://69.72.214.200/~name/site/

That is, when I type in www.domain_b.com, the site loads, but the url icon does not appear, it only appears when I type in the address I used to forward the domain_b name at Godaddy.com:

http://www.domain_b.com
which webhostingbuzz told me is the same page as
http://69.72.214.200/~name/site/

where site is a subfloder directory in my public.html folder.

I have tried typing this in the <header> section:

<link href=”http://69.72.214.200/~name/site/myicon.ico” rel=”shortcut icon”>

<link href=”/myicon.ico” rel=”shortcut icon”>

<link href=”http://www.domain_b/myicon.ico” rel=”shortcut icon”>

<link href=”http://milkyway.whbdns.com/~name/site/myicon.ico” rel=”shortcut icon”>

and I never get the icon to load when I type the registered domain name:
http://www.domain_b.com

the site loads okay all the time, but never the url icon unless I type the forwarded address:
http://69.72.214.200/~name/site/

I even tried to just place a file “favicon.ico” into the directory and taking the icon code out of my index page of the subfolder site. No url icon shows up here either.

Any help?

ps please don’t try and go to any of the links above, they are examples only

@WebJoelMar 16.2007 — Are you naming this "favicon.ico"? Not too sure if calling by "myicon.ico" works although not sure why it wouldn't. Every sites that I've seen that creates these, by default always call the output image "favicon.ico".

Also, -are you trying to view your favicon in IE? IE tends to favor using it's own stupid little branding icon (although I have seen some sites in IE that DO use their own favicon, -and I am at a loss as to how they over-rode IE's preferance).

Try viewing your site(s) with Firefox and see if your favicon works with them.

@ThomasAauthorMar 17.2007 — I did both, I have named it favicon.ico and myicon.ico and the icon shows up with the full address (http://www.69.72.214.200/~name/site/) in both Firefox and IE, but never when I go to the site via the registered forwarded domain name.

So, whether I use Mozilla, Safari, Firefox, or IE, I get the same results.

The url icon never loads unless I use the full address and not the forwarded domain name.

Still at a loss and still searching.

@WebJoelMar 17.2007 — Oh... I am not sure if using a 'forwarded' address would also import your favicon. A postee recently was complaining that their document's "<title></title>" contents (text that appears at the top of the browser when on a page) was not being shown when viewed at the 'forwarded' site either... It was suggested that the forwarding strips the <title></title> data away (and now, -possibly the favicon as well?? I do not know..).

@ZnupiMar 17.2007 — WebJoel, IE6 only shows the icon if the site is bookmarked. I just wanted to shed some light upon this issue, I don't know any solution to the problem.

@ThomasAauthorMar 17.2007 — Interesting. Re: "forwarding strips the <title></title> data away"

That appears to be happening here, because when I view the page source under the forwarded name, the <title></title> data is present. But when I view the page source for the Domain Name, the <title></title> data is absent.

It just gets more curious.

I should look into forwarding protocol/interaction?

@ZnupiMar 17.2007 — Maybe your domain name is actually URL cloaking?...

What is URL cloaking?
Copy linkTweet thisAlerts:
@ZnupiMar 18.2007 — It means that your domain is not redirecting traffic to your IP. It is actually creating a HTML page which contains a frame with src="http://your.ip.here/" ... Access your site via your domain name and view source. If there's something else than the page you wrote, it's URL cloaking...
