Ajax Activity Indicators

I am having some troubles on showing an Activity Indicators for my Application.

Does anyone have any tips on how I can show a indicator gif to the user so they know a process in being completed?

Right now i have to functions I made
showLayer();
hideLayer()

These set the style.visibilty = visible / hidden
But i dont see anything.

Maybe since i am testing on my localhost its so fast I cant see it, but I though i would see a blink.

Any thoughts or samples out there you can share ?
