Google indexing my old address instead of new one

Hi,

A few years ago I had the web address ray-sloan.com, I later changed it to raysloan.com The old address with the – did quite well but it seems that when I do a search now it is still my old address which is showing more often than not despite having had my new address for a few years now, I did resubmit it to the engines at the time.

I have also noticed that my placings are slipping which might have something to do with the old address – I have had webdiversion to my new address since I changed it?

Can anyone suggest what I can do to help my new address get indexed to replace my old one, and perhaps what I can do help improve my positoning ?

Thanks for any help.

Ray

@LeeUFeb 27.2007 — As long as the old address still exists, and has a site there, Google doesn't know any different. You need to do a 301 redirect to the new address. Then, eventually, get rid of the old one.

@smokerauthorFeb 27.2007 — Thanks LeeU, but what is a '301 redirect' and how do I do it ?

@LeeUFeb 27.2007 — It tells the search engines this is a permanent redirect. In the .htaccess file in the home directory of the old site, place the following:
RewriteEngine On
RewriteRule ^(.*)$ http://www.raysloan.com/$1 [R=301,L]
If you don't have this file, it's just a text file without an extension. Be sure to name it .htaccess (the "." is important) and upload it in ASCii format.

Then, when people come to the old site (http://www.ray-sloan.com)">http://www.ray-sloan.com), they will automatically be redirected to the new one (http://www.raysloan.com)">http://www.raysloan.com).

@smokerauthorFeb 27.2007 — I think I follow LeeU, but, the old site is no longer online and hasn't been for some time, so I can't put up the .htaccess file on the old site. Only the domain is out there, and there is webdiversion on the domain pointing to the new address and site, but there are no actual files for the old site online. i.e. I have no webspace for the old site, only a webdiversion from the old domain to the new one. If I was to cancel webdiversion from the old domain and hope that my new address would simply catch up on the directory I could lose potential business?

Thanks again

Ray

@LeeUFeb 27.2007 — Ah, I got you. What is a "webdiversion"?
Copy linkTweet thisAlerts:
@smokerauthorFeb 28.2007 — 'Webdiversion' means that if you click on any address that has this you will be automatically linked through to the address specified i.e. the domain is pointing to another domain specified. This service is offered by my isp - uk2.net. On my domain http://www.ray-sloan.com (which has no webspace) I have webdiversion to my domain with webspace http://www.raysloan.com

Thanks LeeU
