Need some advice please

I’m in the beginning stages of planning a web site. I’ve decided that designing it with CSS is probably the best way to go. I understand that tables can sometimes cause problems, especially in search engine placement.

I don’t know very much about CSS, I have a good understanding of coding with html and a bit of javascript. I am looking for a good ref. guide and/or on line articles to take me in the right direction. If nessasary a good program I can use to simplify things. Currently I use frontpage and do all of my own coding.

I want to create a modern and clean looking site with no animation. Basically one large cell on top, one cell on each side of the main body and one large cell on the bottom. The reason I thought of CSS is I would like the logo to be in the top left corner…over lapping the top cell, left hand cell and a bit of the top left corner of the main body cell. I would like the links on mouseover to change color. I hope this makes sense!

@ray326Feb 23.2007 — Maybe you should check out the links in my sig plus http://www.w3schools.com/ for pointers and http://csszengarden.com for inspiration.

@WebJoelFeb 24.2007 — a good HTML-editor is a good investment. I like "EditPlus2" alot. It is easy to learn, reliable, you can write your code and view it quickly with a 'view html' feature that shows how a browser would see your work. Much better than DW or FP because it doesn't throw all those proprietary tag junk into your code. (Okay, -I'm biased... it is what we told to use at the college and I am quite familiar with it now).

For inspiration and some hands-on build/destroy excercise fun, try this:

www.strangebanana.com

-valid (or almost-valid) d-html templates that are one-of-a-kind, free for use (commercial or personal), generated right before your eyes. No two are ever exactly the same. Granted though, -only about 1 of every 10 or 15 generated templates actually looks like anything 'moderately acceptable', but every so often you do get a fairly nice one. Copy the code to your desktop, experiment with it! Use it 'as is'! Busted it? Can't fix it? -Go get another one! Get a dozen and make a 'folder' of templates for ready-use! ?
