A friend of mine has approached me about adding a (seemingly) simple addition to her forum, which is using PHPBB 2.0.22. The idea is that each member can specify a future date somewhere in their user settings, and the difference between that date and today’s date will be displayed in their signature in some form, probably along the lines of “x months, x days, x hours to go…”
Now, I’ve never really looked under the hood of PHPBB before so I’m not sure what to expect. My theory is that an extra field will need to be added to the user database, a form element will have to be added to the user settings page, and then it will have to be appended to the user’s signature in some way.
The code behind the actual countdown is trivial and shouldn’t present any problems. It’s just the integration into the forum software that I’m flying blind on.
Can somebody advise on the kind of work that would be involved in a project like this and if it’s feasible to proceed given my lack of experience with the software in question?
