Best place to register a domain

There are so many companies out there that allow you to register a domain, but who controls everything. When I first learned about web design register.com was the site to get a domain. Now I am going to start up a web page for my company and I am going to use host gator as my hosting company. On there website they tell you of ways to not get scammed and one of the advices they give you is to not register your domain with the same company that will host your site. The recommend godaddy.com and namecheap.com. What I want to know is, is there a central location that registers domains and what is the a best place to register domains.

@_Aerospace_Eng_Jan 31.2007 — ICANN is the responsible for domains but you need a company like godaddy to register the domain for you. To do it yourself I think it costs a lot more money. With godaddy you have 24/7 customer support which is pretty good I might add. Their registration is pretty cheap and they have loads of options. I remember when I first got my domain they called me within 4 hours of purchase to see how things were going. I do agree somewhat on not having your hosting and domain from same company though hosting through godaddy is good but I don't like their control panel. But they are a trustworthy company IMO. I've had no problems with them.
