Deleting an dynamic table element

I have the following code:

pfTbl = getEl( “User selected items”)
var firstRowId = pfTbl.firstChild.id;
var firstRow = getEl(firstRowId )
var pastStats = getEl(newTrackId );
var highliteSelected = getEl(newTrackId );
highliteSelected = highliteSelected.nextSibling;

// When I comment the statement out, the ‘new/ row is inserted, but it is a duplicate.
