HTML editor

At the moment, I am using Allaire Homesite 4.5 for writing pages, but it is becoming a little long in the tooth.

I would be grateful if people could recommend an alternative.

What I am after is something a step up from Notepad – I don’t want to have to type out every last tag! – but which would provide the option to add tags to the source code as and when. I am not after a ‘visual’ IDE.

I have tried the editor in Open Office, but haven’t found it useful.

Any suggestions gratefully received.

@CharlesJan 26.2007 — HTML Kit will do what your asking but I have that feature disabled. I'm lazy but not so lazy that I don't mind typing my own tags.

@WebJoelJan 26.2007 — editplus2 is a nice program. It has a 'toolbar' with the basic forms and stuff, so if you wanted a TABLE, you click the 'table' icon, and:

"<table>

<tr>

<td></td>

</tr>

</table>"

appears next in your open document, ready for you to populate it accordingly.

Same for "form", "header", etc.

I don't use that aspect much, -mostly I find it as easy to just type my tags manually. But it is a good 'teaching tool' nonetheless, for if you aren't really 100% sure of the syntax of a 'table' or of 'form', the editor creates it for you.

Mostly though, I like the 'quick view' whereby you can jump back & forth between 'code view' and 'how IE sees the page'. (You can program in to show page in your fave browser as well, but I just use the IE-view and test for compliancy a bit later on).

And, you can install the 'spell checker', to proofread your text. -A very useful tool.

I have tried "HTML-kit" and found it maybe a bit too ...powerful, a bit too tool-laden(?) and complicated. I sort of became frustrated with it and returned to my intuitive editplus2. Some people adore HTML-kit. Probably it is good to try both. HTML-kit is free, editplus has a trail-period but is full-featured (nothing is held back).

@slaughtersJan 26.2007 — Try UltraEdit.

One of the best color coded syntax text editors out there, with support for tons of different languages and a built in FTP client

@cnhauthorJan 27.2007 — Thanks very much for the suggestions. Will check some of those out.
