newbie: meeting with customers

I have the chance to start at a small firm as webdesigner soon. I will be meeting the custumers myself and talk about what they want.

I never did this before, so i was wandering if some of you might have some advice about do’s and don’ts, important questions or advice i might give to customers.

1. Don't spend too much time talking about how you use the latest standards and specs. They will get bored by this. Show them examples of awesome layouts and interesting ideas.

2. Ask them what some of there favorite websites are. Ask them what sites they would like their's modeled after. Ask them what aspects of other sites they like.

Also the question I get asked more than likely 9 times out of 10 is "can get my company listed at the top for X search?" The easy answer for that one has to do with Adwords with google. This fairly cheap advertising will work well why you tweak the site for getting listed.

Also you may or may not have noticed by now that many sites have the same pages... About, contact, and so on... IT would be in your best interest to get some of that information from them as soon as possible. It will be a good gauge to see how fast they are willing to get you information. Nothing makes more stress than a client who drags their feet.

Important!!! Get your pricing down! Give the first few clients a low but decent price. Buy the first couple of clients. Because these businesses and people are going to be your base for referals and other work in the future.

Not sure what to charge? Look around your area to see what others are charging and match or beat it.

@brendandonhueJul 22.2003 — #I have read chapters upon chapters about what to charge for web design but I haven't figured it out, because I'm completely different from web designers in my area. So I got my first client (a condo association) by living in the association, and coming up with $15-$20/hour on the spot when we were talking :o

I have created a page range system. Which works well for me where I charge 250.00 for 4-5 pages. So a 10 page site is 500.00

Now those are straight up html pages, no carts and no db's, no SE submits. All of which are extra.
