server-side include (side-by-side)

Hi,

Newbie here learning XHTML, CSS, PHP, etc.

Started a site a few months ago using frames: top frame, left frame(menu), and main frame. Read somewhere about drawbacks of frames, and to use server-side includes instead. Have done some reading on the internet, and experimenting. However, sites I’ve come across cover top-down includes.

Question: if I want my menu on the left side of the screen for all pages, how do I include the menu page so that the page that refers to the menu item chosen appears on the right hand side (side-by-side)?

Thank you!

DL

@datalineauthorJan 11.2007 — Thanks sticks! I did come across this site earlier when I googled SSI, and saw a publish date of February 19th, 1995. Can it be trusted?

@ray326Jan 11.2007 — It's specific to webquest servers. You'll probably need Apache SSI.

Make a test page that is layed out as needed with a div on the left for nav and a div on the right for content. Extract the content of the nav div to another file and put the SSI include for that file in the nav div. That's the basis for what you want to do.
