Time to update

Hello WebDeveloper members,

I’ve been coding in HTML for over 8 years and some CSS 1.0/2.0 basics here and there so I’m pretty much an HTML expert. I am also a web designer and run my own company. However, I have been through MSDN.com and other Microsoft websites and see that times have changed in 8 years.
There are so many coding/scripting langauges to choose from that I have no idea what to do. Some are C++, C#, JScript/JavaScript, J#, ASP.NET, DHTML, XML, XHTML, CSS, RSS, ASP.NET AJAX, WPF (wpf.netfx3.com), XAML.

I merely hold one question for you: what coding/scripting language(s) should I persue next to get my web designing and personal website “up-to-par” with todays’ standards so that I don’t get left in the dust?

Thank you for your consideration,

Andrew

@KDLAJan 03.2007 — I suggest strongly working on building up your CSS skills - those will help you design much faster, and create cleaner sleeker webpages.

However, development of your server-side programming skills would probably serve you best as a potential web designer. I suggest PHP, ASP/ASP.NET, and SQL. Experience managing a large website with includes and also database manipulation seem to be most needed in corporate web jobs.

You also might begin experimenting with programming CMS (content management systems). Many small businesses like to have the opportunity to update their own content, but not worry about the website as a whole.

Good Luck -

KDLA

[/QUOTE]C++ is not used much for server side coding. C# is Windows only. JScript is Microsofts screw up of Javascript. J#, asp.net, and xaml and almost everything you listed are also Windows only. DHtml is an obsolete term for javscript and html. RSS is not really a server language.

I nod toward PHP but Python seems to be a real up and comer and both work everywhere.
