adding , to the numbers

Hi ppl
I am writing into a MySQL database and would like to add comma separators in the numbers (12342.35 >> 12,342.35). Does anyone have a foolproof solution for it?
I guess there must be 2 ways to do this, either adding comma before saving or reading the value and adding comma before showing it. Either would be OK.
Thanks in advance.

@so_is_thisDec 25.2006 — Numbers should be stored in the database in number-type column data types. Sticking in commas would make it into a string. Thus, it is best to only stick in the commas (format the number) at data presentation time -- using the number_format() function, for example.
