screen width

q)When creating webpages with css , are you supposed to use pixels or % for page widths?
If I use pixels then i create for a 800X600 screen only, but it won’t look messy when screen resized which I prefer.

@starsocksDec 19.2006 — You can use either. You should think about what sort of screen size you typical user will have.

You could design a layout with a 'fixed' width, suitable for use on screens with a resolution of 800x600 which I think is still considered the standard - although we're moving towards a new 1024x768 standard I believe. If deciding to use a fixed width layout remember to the width of the scrollbar into account.

Or... you could alternatively opt for a flexible layout using percentages of screen dimensions to control your design, although here you may run into problems with positioning and problems with your layout on different screen sizes or when resizing the browser window.

It's quite a debate about which is best and both sides have their good points and bad so it's up to you which you choose and really does depend on your target users. Personally though I like my sites to have fixed aspects about them but to be flexible enough to span over most of the page, although it is a bit tricky to get stuff to behave when resizing the browser window.

I'm sure there's an article which can describe this much better and in more detail than I can though I don't have a link to hand. Anyway, hope this helps ?
