Redirect Question

I was wondering if anyone knows how to do this, or if it’ possible.

If I buy a new domain name, “www.mynewdomainname.com” but I don’t purchase hosting for it, can I have it redirect to a subdirectory I already own and have hosting for? As in, if someone types into their browser “www.mynewdomainname.com” they’ll automatically land on a page on my website “www.myoldwebsite.com/newdomainname.html”? I’ve tried using htaccess, but it doesn’t seem to have worked.

@coppocksDec 13.2006 — Well if I understand correctly, add this to whatever index page loads when they go to www.mynewdomainname.com ... inside the <head></head> tags...

That'll take 1 second to switch 'em.

@byrned_umich_edauthorDec 13.2006 — Thanks copocks, but I don't actually have an index page hosted anywhere for "www.mynewdomainname.com" I just own the name, and not the hosting, so there is no index page for me to edit. Is there any way to buy a domain name, and then have it direct to another page, without having to put up an index page on a server somewhere?

@WattsDec 13.2006 — Yes. Contact your current host and tell them you have a domain you want "parked" and "pointed" to your existing domain. Most hosts will charge a small fee ($5 a month or so) for this. That way www.yourdomain2.com will bring up www.yourdomain1.com whenever someone types it in.
