Java code for buddy tracking system…can anyone help

Hi,
I have been given an assignment to develop an algorithm which lets us track our friends who are nearby within a given radius.(A message has to pop up when 2 friends are near by)It is essentially a buddy tracking system and come up with a proof of concept demo.The coding has to be in java.The problem is iam very much new to java and dont know anythng.
Was browzing the net from a long time and got only 1 article but not able to figure how to modify it according to my requirement. The website for that article is: [url]www.cs.arizona.edu/people/alon/cell[/url]

Can anyone kindly help me……the assignment is due in 10 more days ?
