Anyone Know How to get around this?

Ok, im trying to insert an Image Map on Myspace, and it keeps showing it as a broken link. I know where the problem is I just dont know how to fix it

HERES WHAT IT LOOKS LIKE:

Before I Submit it

<IMG SRC=”http://img114.imageshack.us/img114/6863/imagemapbackgroundln7.jpg” WIDTH=”373″ HEIGHT=”550″ BORDER=”0″ USEMAP=”#ImageMapBackground”>
(then all the mapping stuff)

After I submit it

<IMG SRC=”http://img114.imageshack.us/img114/6863/imagemapbackgroundln7.jpg” WIDTH=”373″ HEIGHT=”550″ BORDER=”0″ USEMAP=”&#035
ImageMapBackground”>
(then all mapping stuff)

Myspace automatically does that, and then sees it as a Broken link…After entering “#” and submiting it changes it to “&#035”, Anyway of getting around this?

Thanks, Zac

@KDLADec 05.2006 — ASC character code for "#" is "& # 3 5 ;" (without spaces -- can't get this thing to display this correctly as code or text).

Try changing your "#" in your code to this (including a semicolon; looks like MySpace is leaving that out).

Dumb question, -but you did put the ";" after "#" and it still messes up? You could try putting a "" in front of the "#" and see if that renders the character correctly:

<IMG SRC="http://img114.imageshack.us/img114/6863/imagemapbackgroundln7.jpg" WIDTH="373" HEIGHT="550" BORDER="0" USEMAP="#ImageMapBackground">

(then all the mapping stuff)

The 'escape character' is useful in many situations in javascript for instance, to prevent the browser from thinking that the next character is a shell command or something...

But I suspect that if you read the "myspace" TOS/FAQ (I have not), you just may discover that they do not allow 'linking to other sites' and this may even extend to not being permitted to link 'from within your own site' but I do not know why they'd disallow that because it isn't considered 'advertising'.

A lot of 'free' hosts disallow you to link to sites/URLs 'outside of their domain' because they do no want you to link to a comptetitor service (you know, -a 'myspace' site linking to a 'geocities' site, -that). Some sites allow you to link from your own site to another site on the same server (same host, different member) as this only promotes their own.

@ZacerauthorDec 07.2006 — DANG! nice man that seems to work =), you genius you =P. Cool now thats out of the way I guess my next question would be could I set that as my background?? and still get the mapping to work on it?

@WebJoelDec 07.2006 — ....my next question would be could I set that as my background?? and still get the mapping to work on it?
My guess would be "no". That is the whole point of being a 'background'-anything, is that content, etc., is 'on top of' and unaffected by 'the background'. If the content were affected by the background, then a whole of sites would be in serious trouble. ? "z-index" would be quite ineffectual and "position:absolute" would remove the 'content' (and thus, the 'map co-ords' from the document flow entirely..)

Having said that, depending upon where and how you place the 'imagemap' though, you can achieve some fairly kewl effects. -The 'imagemap' could have translucent edges that fade into transparency and blend artfully with the background-color and/or background-image of the page...

It's been quite some time since I've worked with imagemaps in any capacity (four years now at least?)...

@ZacerauthorDec 08.2006 — Lol yeah I get what you mean about that being all in all point-less, but what im trying to do is like.....well my background is on the side.....not really behind all the content. Ill show you, go to my MySpace www.myspace.com/zacer and you will see on the left is plain black and thats where the image gos, and it only takes up that space, so therefore it really wouldnt be in the way. But anyway wanted to say thanks for all your help =).

You could have an image that is 'fixed' so that when you scroll, the image to the left 'follows' you down the page. That could have your 'image map' on it. That image (or the DIV that contains it) would have to be 'hacked' to work properly with IE, -not too big a problem. I have several solutions for that.

I did check your page with my validator... quite a few warnings in there (the bulk of which are just proprietary stuff). See attached image:
