How would you make this website?

My wife approached me yesterday because she wants me to make her a website. The website would be a place for her and her friends to connect and let each other know what’s going on in their lives (kind of like a newsletter meets a blog).

The requirements
– Every friend should be able to add content (preferably everyone would have their own account so that you know who left each message)
– A calendar so they can add their kids school plays, birthdays, etc
– A photo gallery

Security is not a concern as it will all be on a .htaccess controlled folder on my webserver

Pretty simple, but how would YOU do it?

@TheBearMayNov 27.2006 — What are you considering using on the server side? Might want to look at some of the free forum software to see if it would work.

That's what I am hoping to get some answers on.

that's not a bad idea. You can add pictures, send emails, PM's, add your comments (i.e. reply) to a post, etc

@KDLANov 27.2006 — A blog might work, too. Depends on the interface your wife is imagining.

Since you're talking about a calendar -- I'd try a content management system. The calendar interface might be easier to work with in CMS (where you can customize the look of it). As to the other, they can upload all sorts of stuff to a resource gallery, and create webpages in a template you create (if they're not scared to do so).

@tracknutNov 27.2006 — GoDaddy's Linux hosting would allow you to put up a forum and a calendar, as well as a photo gallery. Seems quite workable, if you've got $4/month...

@saeauthorNov 27.2006 — I already have hosting. Thanks.

I have been giving serious consideration to a CMS (I am very familar with postnuke) or phpbb with some addons for a photo gallery (I know it exists) and a calendar (have to check on this one yet)

@tracknutNov 27.2006 — Sorry, didn't realize hosting on your server was a requirement.

@saeauthorNov 29.2006 — Update

I installed phpbb with a gallery and a calendar, but that's too difficult to use. What she wants is a calendar in which you can add entries like a blog. New entries should be able to be added by 5 different users.

I have been looking at wordpress and it seems like it might be able to do it. Any other ideas?

@scottrickmanDec 20.2006 — I've used dotnetnuke on windows servers, if you're on linux try phpnuke
