password protect links QUESTION

Is there a way to password protect a link to a file. I want to prompt a user just for a password when they click a link to download a file. After they enter the correct password then they will be able to save the file. Does any one have any ideas on how to do this??

ANY Suggestion is a good one.

@KravvitzNov 14.2006 — Is your web server running Apache? Are you allowed to use .htaccess files? Would you mind passwording the whole directory that the file is in?
