[RESOLVED] So what if my coding doesn’t validate?

I thought I would see how far off my coding is for the first time ever, and the validator found tons of things that were “not allowed.” I changed a bunch of them like it suggested, but when I uploaded, it was a mess! So I put it back. My question is, so what if it’s not “perfect?” As long as it seems to get the job done, and the page looks pretty good, why should I sweat the validation thing? I really don’t have time to go over every page and try to fix everything.

Any comments on this?

Thanks.

@KravvitzNov 10.2006 — Validating is one of the best things you can do to help make sure that your pages will work in all of the various web browsers that people use.

I suggest you read these articles on that topic:

@drhowarddrfineNov 10.2006 — Kravitz has good links. In addition, you can never be sure how a browser will react to an error, especially from version to version. If one browser upgrades, the behavior may change and react differently.

However, if there are 'tons of errors', it may not be worth fixing and you'll have to live with it until it breaks or tear it up and start over.

@LeeUNov 10.2006 — It's kind of like building codes. Sure, you could let a few slip by but you never know when that big storm, earthquake, etc., will hit. You also don't know what the building will be used for in a few years from now or who (disabled, etc.) is coming to visit.

@champagne007authorNov 10.2006 — Thanks for the tips....I'll try to spend a rainy day working on it. BTW, is there a way to validate before you upload? I used the www.validator.w3.org site, but obviously it had to be uploaded first, and I'd rather have it "perfect" before I do that. I suppose I could upload it as another named page, then rename it and upload later to the right spot?

Thanks again.... everyone here is very helpful!

@grumpyoldtechsNov 10.2006 — TAKES A DEEP DEEP BREATH

(let the rant begin)

If you code doesn't validate you are not conforming to standards, every browser will display differently, you are more than likely making an inaccessible website, inaccessible websites are technically illegal, if someone with a disability tries to use your site and can't they can take you court and you have to job of proving that your website doesn't need to be accessible. your also using old technologies which are depreciated and require more bandwidth longer page loading times which will annoy visitors and decrease the amount of traffic to your site.

and the final reason (which is by far the most important)

If i ever come across it i will slate into it and rip it to pieces

I can feel a new article coming long ?

If you use the Web Developer extension in Firefos, it will validate local files.

@abzNov 10.2006 — the w3.org validator has options for pages that arent live yet. you can browse the file on your HD, or just copy and paste into the box ?

@champagne007authorNov 10.2006 — Gee, Grumpy Old Tech, you don't have to be so mean. Not everyone can be a web genius. Some of us are doing pretty well to get what we've got. At least I'm trying.

But OK, I'll try harder..................

That's an excellent analogy, Lee. ? May I quote you too?

The Web Developer extension for Firefox seems to use the file upload interface of the X/HTML and CSS validators.

I use the HTML Validator extension as well.
