IE information bar reinitializes window

Hello. I’m struggling with the Information Bar in IE that has been around since XP sp2.

I have a website that pops up a new window showing an imbedded Google Map. The user has the option of clicking on a button, and the window contents change to a custom map viewer (by replacing the source url of the document). Finally, the user has the option of clicking on an icon, which downloads a Google Earth .kml file of their location. So far so good.

With IE, when the user clicks the Google Earth icon, the IE information bar prompts them if it’s OK to download the file. I don’t mind this. But what happens is, if the user clicks Download File, the window reinitializes back to the original window contents. This is the original Google Map, at the original location. The user then needs to refollow their steps and click on the Google Earth icon again to download the file.

Is there any way to stop IE from completely reinitializing the window contents? Why can’t it just download the file when the user gives the OK???

Any help appreciated.

@AmyAngel If you didn't know the answer then why did you even reply? ?

@cabinfeverauthorNov 03.2006 — Hi. I'm testing this on the server, not locally. I don't have a problem with the message itself, but the problem is that the window reinitializes back to its initial state, which by this point is a completely different webpage. The same thing happens with the information bar popup blocker message. If you say Yes to allowing the popup, IE completely reinitializes the window and will allow future popups, rather than just opening the popup window immediately. DO other people see this happening too?

thanks

@_Aerospace_Eng_Nov 03.2006 — Yeah its not just your browser. The solution is don't force unwanted popups on users. But since you haven't posted a link to your page we can only guess at why it tries to download the map. It really shouldn't. But then again it is IE7. Live with it.

@cabinfeverauthorNov 03.2006 — The website is http://maps.orcity.org.

-Open the map

-Click on the eye icon near the top of the screen

-Click somewhere in the map. A birdseye viewing window will pop up (IE 7 will show the information bar about the popup -say Yes. The whole map will reinitialize - part of the problem)

-Once the birdseye viewing window is opened, click on the globe icon (orthophoto view).

-Pan around by dragging the mouse

-Now, click the Google Earth icon. The information bar pops up asking if it's OK to download a file (a kml file). Say Yes. You'll see the window will completely reinitialize, back to the birdseye view at the original extent. This is the problem.

yeah, I may have to live with the problem, it's just annoying.

Thanks,
