problem with using a JS anchor to change an IDs display style..

in my example below, when i click the anchor, i get the text “inline” (which “erases” the page i clicked the anchor on to show itself) instead of my ID showing up… why is that? what am i forgetting/doing wrong?
<html>
<head>
<title></title>
<style type=”text/css”>
#thing
{
background-color: green;

width: 100%;
height: 100%;

display: none;
}
</style>

</head>
<body>

<div id=”thing”></div>

<a href=”javascript:document.getElementById(‘thing’).style.display=’inline'”>show my thing</a>

</body>
</html>
@gil_davisOct 30.2006 — The <A> tag is trying to navigate the the "javascript:" protocol, so you get "inline" in an otherwise empty page. Change your link to:&lt;a href="#" onclick="document.getElementById('thing').style.display='inline';return false"&gt;show my thing&lt;/a&gt;
