how to validate a number field in range of 1 to 3 or just 3 digits

hi, i m using this codes in my asp form to validate a field must be in range 1 to 3 or just 3 digits in data field, but its not working.

if(document.form.rollno.value > 3){
alert(‘you must fill only 3 digit roll number please!’);
document.form.rollno.focus();
return false;
}

please check it and tell me where i m wrong
