<? is the short php tag and is not enabled by default on all PHP builds. It in some cases needs to enabled in the php.ini, which is not avilable to edit on all servers (virtual hosting...)
@NogDogOct 24.2006 — #Just to amplify on what Sheldon wrote: [b]<?php[/b] will work on all PHP installations, [b]<?[/b] may or may not work. So, you can make your code more portable (and save a lot of potential headaches in the future) if you use the long form even if your server currently supports the short form.
