Question about buttons on this site:

Hello,
I’m brand new here. ?
Is there anyone who could help me to fix this: www.picturesbyme.com ? BTW I saw many sites with the same problem.. could be my browser? (IE – can it be fixed??)
The buttons were working just fine for a few months on several computers(home, office, laptop, friends..) now it’s only shows a grey frame and had to be clicked twice to make the effect… I was told this hover button thing is a dying horse.. I just don’t know how to from here.. in a way I like these effects on the other hand if it suffers more maybe I should ….
Is there any other way to create these effects???
Could you point me into the right directions in a more detailed way?
Thank you!
Adam

@adamsmithauthorOct 16.2006 — Hi,

Thanks for the quick info... so far i only understood the "the" "for" and "not" words .. as I mentioned I'm pretty new but I like to learn new stuff.

So are you saying this is the future? or just a better way? is there any way to temporary fix the orig. version?

Thanks.

@KravvitzOct 16.2006 — CSS is the present and the future. Many web designers and many who teach it are stuck in the past.

Using Java for a simple effect like that is like getting a pneumatic nail gun to hang a picture instead of just using a normal hammer -- it's very silly. Besides not everyone will have Java installed, therefore, requiring it for main navigation is very bad practice.

Because some one will probably post these anyway, here are two versions is the quick fix you are looking for. I suggest you only use it temporarily until you learn how to do this a better way.

@adamsmithauthorOct 16.2006 — I tried but of course I must have done something wrong as it did not really do a thing.

I inserted this:

<script type="text/javascript" src="objectSwap.js"> </script>

into the head part and it is still the same..

what do I wrong? how should I do it?

Thanks!

@KravvitzOct 16.2006 — Did you put objectSwap.js in the right place on your server?

@_Aerospace_Eng_Oct 16.2006 — Those scripts would work but they only seem to work with object tags not applet tags. Read this http://www.veiled-chameleon.com/weblog/archives/000004.html

@KravvitzOct 16.2006 — Oh. That would cause it to not work too. Thanks for catching that, AE.

My server? You mean at godaddy? How?

AE

I read the chameleon page you linked but I did not see a thing there what took me any further in order to fix this button problem.

I saw a page from 2004 and someone asked for help.

It must be a way to fix these.

@KravvitzOct 16.2006 — If GoDaddy is your web host, then yes. If you don't already know how to use FTP, then I can't help you.

The page that AE linked to seems to explain how to replace applet elements with object elements.

P.S. I don't think anyone's abbreviated my screenname as KR before.
