printing web page problem

I have a problem trying to print a web page as it looks on the screen. I am using Dreamweaver and layout tables and this is my first web page. The problem is that if there is more than one printer page to print, extra blank pages will be printed. Worse yet, sometimes the printer goes into a run-away mode and the Print Preview will show pages being incremented with no end to it. Sometimes Portrait mode works OK but run-away happens in Landscape mode. My system is Windows XP SP2. The same thing happens on my laptop (also XP) but a different printer.
Please, can someone explain what is happening and what can I do about it?
Thanks

@WebJoelOct 09.2006 — You might have to make a seperate CSS sheet for "media" output instead of "screen" ("monitors", etc). If your screen output is intended let's say, for a 1024-px wide monitor, then printing it out as-is would cause problems as this would print wider and taller than a single sheet of 8.5 X 11 paper.

A seperate style sheet could be created that possibly strips certain layout schemes from the page (excessive borders, margins & padding, any unecessary banner-ads, etc.), while leaving all the salient data there to actually be printed within the confines of a page-sized format.

I don't know exactly how to do this myself, but have had to make for instance, a direction map on a web page be the only part that prints out (leaving the other web-page stuff off of the printed page). -Basically, it wasn't a 'print page' function, but I made 'just the map, and text data that accompanies the map' be the sole material the is sent to the printer on-demand.

This might give you some ideas, or help frame questions that others are better skilled to answer.

@oadamsonauthorOct 10.2006 — Thanks for your reply and advice. I think what you said is consistent with what I already found out that by removing some of the extra design along the sides in the layout things got back to normal. Why this would happen I don't understand, especially in landscape mode as the paper was plenty wide to print out everything. Possible bug somewhere?

Thanks
