Max 2 repeat on Description?

In META description, I can repeat maximum 2 times a word; what about commas, periods, and other stand-alone characters?

@jamesx521authorOct 08.2006 — I can obviously do it in keywords, since I'm separating the words with commas, but does anyone have any idea if that comma-repetition is not good for META Description?

@_lt_Eddie_gt_Oct 08.2006 — You're missing the point of the element. It's to write a grammatically correct and accurate description to attract people to your website. It shouldn't contain stuffed keywords as it has no effect on rank.

@jasondmceOct 09.2006 — I agree with Eddie, meta tags are becoming obsolete, but to answer your question, you don't have to worry about characters.

Thanks for the info. Since I'm not too updated, then if META tags are becoming obsolete, what is it that will replace them (in the future)? Or, are there other methods that can help rankings, other than having a keyword-rich website with good META code and lots of links of your site on other sites?

@jasondmceOct 09.2006 — Content is king! (I know you've probably heard that one before, but it's true). Host a blog on your site, and try to write original/engaging content throughout your site.

Here are some on-page factors still can help:

1) Include keywords in header tags: <h1></h1>

2) Create a well structured navigation system. (Put a link to your sitemap on every page).

3) Use keywords in image "alt" attributes when appropriate.

When linking, avoid link farms and other "bad neighborhoods." One-way links are the best, but reciprocal links are still usefull between related sites (avoid directories that require a reciprocal link). Always use keywords in your anchor text in your back-links, but don't use the same exact phrase in every one of your links (change it up sometimes, this helps to tell Google that the back-links are created naturally).

You can also create a text or xml sitemap and submit it to "Google Site Maps." This will aid Google in the indexing process.

@NogDogOct 10.2006 — Meta tags are not obsolete when used for their intended purposes (which have nothing to do with search engine ranking). When you try to use any HTML element in an artificial way to try to increase search ranking, you actually risk lowering your ranking (or even getting blacklisted) if the developers for a given search engine are on to that particular "trick". Jasondmce's suggestions provide a good basic outline of how to address your search ranking.
