IE object expected

I am haveing a bit of trouble with some javascript. As usual, it seems to work fine in FireFox but IE barfs all over with an Object expected error.

The problem is when I try to call a function that I have defined earlier in the code. The whole page looks like this:

<html>
<body>
<script type=”text/javascript”>
function DoIt() {
alert(“the end”);
}
</script>

THIS IS SOME TEXT

<script type=”text/javascript”>
DoIt(); <— ERROR IS HERE
</script>

I know this is a stupid problem and probably has a simple solution, but I have spent the last 4 hours searching for it with no luck.
