Position div next to button

i am placing a search facility within a hidden <div> and want to show this layer when a user clicks a search button.

i am ok with the code to show/hide the layer but i am struggling with the css to position the div so that it opens next to the button regardless of the screen res.

is this possible. if so id be grateful if somebody could point me in the right direction. thanks!
