fading background w/o photoshop

Hi, I’m completely new to html etc, so this might be a dumb question. I’m trying to teach myself by messing around with the code on a blogger account I set up and seeing what works with trial and error. I set up a background image that is a faded photograph that I just set up the link to from where I found it on the web (hopefully that site doesn’t change the link to a different pic) and I wanted the edge of the background to fade into the white background of the rest of the page. I know that if I had Photoshop it would be possible to do that, but Photoshop is a little more $ than I have right now. Is there a way to fade the edge of a background image using html?
Thanks!
